How long does it take a foreclosure to become public record?

I have gotten a couple pieces of mail (one registered) for the owner of the property I live in (I have no contact with him as I pay a property management company) from Washington Mutual. I suspect he may be in default on the mortgage. However the county records do not presently show this. I assume the information doesn’t get to the county until after it has gotten to the mortgage holder. Does anybody know how long it usually takes for that information to make it to the public records?
